Database pricing? Dynon is $99 a year, garmin is $149.

    Shawn,

Unless I am missing something or things at Dynon have changed, when you presently purchase Skyview, the database subscription is included in the purchase price of the unit, for life. For my Skyview database subscription (FAA aviation and obstacle), I pay nothing. Now, if I want to add Seattle Avionics charts to Skyview, that is $99/yr or $199/3 yrs.

I let my Seattle Avionics subscription expire, because Skyview and/or Foreflight/WngX suffice just fine (VFR).

That withstanding, the G796 and Aera 660 units are awesome. But at this point, adding either one would be somewhat overkill.

As you implied, I also use my iPad for additional information and Skyview backup.

Well,  that sounds great Shawn,  but that's not the way the IPS Software 4.X works.

It lays the "Website" buttons on TOP of the Image that I upload to the site.  Not as sophisticated as it might could be.

So,  the banner image background must be "color matched" to the existing IPS Software background image.  They are not "separable".

There is a new version out there now....

    Dave

    Bingo Dave!

    That looks great.

Thank you for all your effort.

Yes,   I see that.   Somewhat annoying, certainly not Perfect,  but I think the latest version is improved over prior imagery where the data was "on top" of each other and mostly unreadable near the "Buttons".

The IPS Software has trouble registering and aligning different pixel size forum banner images on their 4.X Website SW.

I chose to "quickly hit the compromise" where no "button" or image data was obscured,  and it looked usable to me as is....I can spend more time working on an exact match by manually setting uploadable SCFLIER Forum banner  sizes with  X by Y defined pixel images to the Website SW if this really bothers you.  However,  the Website interface is fairly clunky and it is a trial and error process,   which may interrupt others' viewing of the key "buttons" on the top while I iterate changes to a "perfect" solution.....

My "new forum banner imagery test plan" includes the following "computer display types" that I test each banner image change against:

    • HP Desktop Computer with large 22 Inch Screen
    • HP Laptop Computer with smaller 14 inch screen
    • iPhone 6S
      • Portrait display mode
      • Landscape display mode
    • iPad Mini
      • Portrait display mode
      • Landscape display mode

As you can see,  I will need to test six computer display types for each banner modification made.  I believe that the iPad Mini display "look" is similar if not identical to a "full size iPad",  but I no longer carry a "full size" iPad,  so that is another untested (by me) variable.   As you can see,  my list of various displays to test and verify banner performance doesn't include Android Devices.  Curious if we have anyone reading the SCFLIER Forum on an Android device.

    Friendly Feedback Welcome....

    Dave

Thank you Dave, for the feedback. I like the new site.

    I guess it's kinda' like me . . . a work in progress.

Regardless of the fact that some will argue the value of my plane has gone down . . .

It's not so much that, but I do think by going E-LSA, you reduce the size of your market, when it's time to sell the airplane.

    Here's why:

I have talked to some perspective buyers (especially 1st time buyers) who would not even consider an E-AB or E-LSA aircraft, for fear that shortcuts or shoddy maintenance may have been signed off by individuals, who have not received sufficient maintenance training to ensure a high degree of quality. In some cases, based upon some airplanes I've considered purchasing, I think that is valid concern. Of course, one could argue, the same could be said for aircraft that have been maintained by 'not so good' A&P's. We all know there are some out there.

As for the resale, you will never know the true value of your E-LSA . . . until the day you sell it. IMHO, attention to detail and good documentation is key to selling any aircraft.

    1) Custom Streams are a feature that allows a member to filter displayed content based on their preferences. On the front end, the nav bar tab titled "Activity" -> My activity Streams shows any custom Stream a Member may  have created, as well as offers the option to create a new one.

    2) Related to the above, and your question, to Delete a "Custom Stream" one would need to open that Custom Stream, then at the top, to the right of the Stream title, is a red trashcan icon.

Click that trashcan icon to delete the custom Stream

let me know if that works for you

Thanks a lot Dave . . . that did the trick!

Attention to all SCFLIER Forum Members

our Website Software - provided by a company that handles all the website structure,  posting major topic outlines,  user interactions, responses to internet SCFLIER login and Posting Updates, Uploads,  etc.

will be updated from a no longer supported software version "3.X" to the latest, supportable website software "4.X"

    TOMORROW Wednesday 4/26/2017.

The new Website will have a slightly different look and feel.

Having supportable website baseline SW is important to maintaining the security and reliable operation of the SCFLIER Forum.

    In the new "4.X" Software,

there will no longer be a distinction between "User Names" and "Display Names".  These two data fields will be merged into one name for each user.

User Names are what you use to LogIn with - your Login ID.

Display Names are usually, for most of our members,  identical to your Login ID (User Name),

but some SCFLIER Forum Members have chosen to have a different, unique  "Display Name" next to their Avatar on the screen for all to see.

Having a different UserName and DisplayName is no longer possible in the new "4.X" Software.

In order to maintain the ability for all to still Log In and have access to SCFLIER after the SW Update,

we will be carrying forward AS IS everyone's  (Log In) "User Name".    Your Password also carries forward AS IS.

After the update,  we can handle the "Display Name" differences for the few SCFLIER members that want to change their ID on a case by case basis.    If you have a different "Display Name" than User Name now,  it would be good for those very few SCFLIER Members in that situation to remember BOTH their Display Name and User Name for future potential updates if needed by your friendly Admin.

    Regards

The SCFLIER SportCruiser Forum is now fully Operational

with the latest supportable new 4.X SW version of the website, including a new look and feel and some interesting new features.

An initial check shows everything is working, and our content is available once again on the forum.

The main SCFLIER Image "Logo Theme" is now working.

I will also work to change the "Display Name" of those SCFLIER users who had a different "Display Name" than their "Username" (login ID)

Please let me know via my email below if you want this done -- only affects a small subset of our Forum Members who changed their "Display Name"  to something different from their login ID.

    Please contact me at

    scflieradm@yahoo.com

    if there are any issues.

    Regards and have fun

  7. Letters of Authorization.

And CSA very reluctant to write them...

    Great article posted above

    ....

    "THE GREAT ESCAPE CLAUSE

As an aircraft owner for nearly 50 years and an active combatant in numerous struggles over ADs and maintenance requirements, if I have to be regulated, I’d much rather it be by the FAA than by the manufacturer of my aircraft or engine. We all love to complain about the FAA, but at least it is primarily motivated by a concern for safety, and is subject to numerous laws intended to protect us from overzealous regulation. In contrast, my experience with aircraft and engine manufacturers is that they primarily are motivated by concerns about being sued, and frequently act in ways that are harmful to those of us who own their products.

One evening over dinner in Sebring, I was talking to a staff member of the Experimental Aircraft Association about my concerns over the seemingly unfettered powers of coercion granted to LSA manufacturers. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, “Mike, that’s why we got the FAA to include the great escape clause.”

He explained that the owner of an SLSA who doesn’t care for how he’s being treated by the manufacturer of his aircraft has the ability to “opt out” by surrendering the aircraft’s SLSA airworthiness certificate and applying for an Experimental Light Sport airworthiness certificate to replace it. Then, he can basically ignore the manufacturer’s instructions and operate and maintain his factory-built LSA as he sees fit, almost as if it were an amateur-built Experimental.

By doing this, he probably gives up any remaining warranty and factory support to which he might have been entitled. He also gives up the ability to use his aircraft for compensation to give flight instruction or tow gliders. But what he gets in return is the ability to operate and maintain his LSA pretty much as he sees fit. Engine and propeller TBOs would become mere suggestions, the way they are for certificated aircraft. If the LSA is appropriately equipped, it probably can become legal to fly in IMC, assuming the designated airworthiness representative who approves its new operating limitations allows it."

Thanks EAA ! And also the FAA !

    The great escape clause.

    SLSA to ELSA

There is a possible downside to taking the aircraft from S-LSA to E-LSA. It may decrease the resale value.

There are some prospective buyers (I have talked to several) who will not even consider a purchase of an Experimental or E-LSA.

It seems their reluctance has to do with how an aircraft has been maintained and by whom.

This speaks volumes about good record keeping and reputable mechanics, who give extra attention to detail.

  8. Welcome Wmlnce.

    A couple of reasons.....

    • I love Garmin equipment (maybe this does not really count)
    • Mainly it's the easiest way to upgrade, it's a direct swap bolt for bolt for the 396/496 unit. No modifications are needed to mount it in the instrument panel. The Airgizmos are the exact same size when mounting them in the panel.
    • Our instrument panels are shorter than the newer 2010 and up planes. Our panel real estate is limited and we cannot install the 796 as it's too big.(unless you want to spend tens of thousands of dollars and upgrade your instrument panel to the current panel size).
    • It's designed to go hand in hand with the new GTX-345 all in one transponder/ADS-B unit, the manual has a section on wiring the two units together.
    • The 660 is a 796 in a smaller footprint and has some newer features.
    • For the physical size of the unit the screen is HUGE compared to our 396/496
    • It'll display all the ADS-B and weather from compatible equipment, GDL-39, Stratus, the DIY version of ADS-B and many others
    • it's lighter, smaller, faster, brighter, uses less power.......

I could go on and on about the 660 but to sum it up the main reason is because there is no physical modification needed to the aircraft. This is probably the easiest LOA that CSA will have to approve. There's nothing else to mount, no cutting or drilling required and the wiring is wire for wire with the addition of 1 serial I/O line on the new 660. It has 2 serial I/O lines whereas the 396/496 only has one. And it's wireless to stream data to other Garmin products, like the GTX-345, and your ipad or tablet of choice.

Hope this helps, if you need more specific info please let me know. I have a ton of data I gathered for this LOA request.

Thank you Shawn, that's just what I was looking for. All good points.

  9. I have a LOA request in for the installation of the Garmin Aera 660 gps to replace the now discontinued Garmin GPSMAP 396 that came in the early aircraft. This is a direct swap with no physical modification to the aircraft or any additional equipment at all.

Just out of curiosity, why did you choose the Aera 660?

I am also equipped with the Garmin 396. Nice little unit as a backup, but I am interested in your reasons for the 660.

When I do the ADS-B upgrade, I plan on adding a few other things and the Aera 660 may be one of them.
