From new SCFLIER Forum Member TTABS, May 2, 2018

Hello everybody!  Newbie here!  I go by the name ttabs on these things and I look forward to sharing my passion of flying with you!

I'm really thrilled to be a new owner of a SportCruiser and to be flying it around the pacific NW.  I'm an LSA pilot currently based near Spokane WA and have been spending my last 8 years flying Trikes all over the place out here.  Now - if you just said "What's a Trike?!?" ....   I have over a hundred vids posted on youtube.  If you're interested in having a peek - just click on this link  ' TTABBS'   You'll get an idea of my playground out here and the type of flying I enjoy.

So I felt it's time to get into fixed wings to accent my trike flying and what better way to learn than in a SC.  Eventually my flying's going to take me out into the backcountry of Idaho so stay tuned as I'm sure I'll be posting vids of my SC experience in the area I call home.

There are similarities between my trike and the SC - for instance both run a 100 hp Rotax and I've been very involved with maintenance of this engine type.  Perhaps I can bring a little something to the table here on my experience with this engine and things I've done with them.   As for flying 3-axis, there are some totally reversed things I need to 'un-screw' in my head.  For instance foot steering a Trike is 180 degrees out of sync with rudder control.  And in a trike, we push the bar forward to go up and swing it left .... to go right!    This is going to be a challenge!

And speaking of aircraft problems -  right out of the gate I already have  issues with my SC from it's flight from Houston trip, so I'll use this thread to post problems, fixes, thoughts, suggestions, or pose questions for you to comment.  Also who knows -  you may see a video or two on here.

I bought this beauty a month ago where it was located in Houston TX.

From new SCFLIER Member Hwick2000, March 2018

Thank you for allowing me to become a member of the forum... l would like to introduce myself.

The name is Harold Wickham, first off No I do not have a Sport Cruiser... I wanted one for years...

I fly a very similar aircraft, built in the Czech Republic by Milan Briselta... it is a 2016 Bristell S-LSA (see photos) it has the full Garmin suite G3x touch. It is an incredible plane and a true joy to fly.

I live in Dayton Nevada at Dayton Valley Airpark A-34 just a 10 minute flight to beautiful South Lake Tahoe airport. I have a really big hanger with a Pilots apartment, lounge and courtesy vehicle.

If your ever in the area feel free to stop in and stay over if you like. We are a pretty friendly Airpark. There are many airports very close by and fantastic place to fly here. Although keep in mind this is the Sierras and the weather can change rapidly and the altitude comes up quickly.

Again thank you for allowing me in the forum without a Sport Cruiser...

From Tim, a new  SCFLIER Forum member, located in England just north of London.

“My home base, North Weald Airfield, NWA (ICAO Ref:- EGSX) - is about 20 miles north of London, and is one of the oldest airfields in the UK. It opened in 1916 as an RFC (Royal Flying Corps) fighter station during the first World War, only 13 years after the Wright Brothers made the World's first powered flight, to help combat the German Zeppelin raids on London. The RFC become the RAF in 1918 towards the end of World War I by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.

During World War Two, NWA was a front line RAF fighter station,
and many US pilots joined the RAF to gain "dog fight" experience long before the USA entered the war.

A lot of information is on-line but a useful link here:-
http://www.northwealdairfield.org/History/history.html

North Weald's finest hour came in the summer of 1940, when it served as a frontline airfield in the Battle of Britain.

During the Second World War, North Weald played host to Squadrons made up of many foreign nationals, including Americans, Czechs, Poles and also Norwegians, to which the airfield and village maintain special links to this day. Hurricanes, Spitfires and Blenheims were the most common types to be seen at North Weald.

Some may be able to identify the airfield from WWII movies… the NWA Control Tower has “Listed” status, which means it’s of historic or architectural significance and effectively has a building preservation order on it.

NWA has been featured as a backdrop in various WWII films

· Battle of Britain (1968)
· Memphis Belle (1990)
· Band of Brothers (2001)”

See below for more pictures at North Weald Airfield, including a flyby of famous WWII British and USA Fighter Aircraft
“Two Eagle Squadrons of American RAF volunteers – 71 and 121 – were based at North Weald during 1941, so it was fitting that a special formation of four aircraft representing these squadrons included the Airfield in a commemorative flypast over their former bases around the east of England…
The formation, which started out at Duxford and had the callsign ‘Eagle Squadron’, was led by a Hawker Hurricane in 601 (County of London) Squadron markings, representing the aircraft flown by the American volunteer Billy Fiske during the Battle of Britain.
The second aircraft was a Spitfire painted in Bill Dunn’s colours. He was the first US pilot to become an ace while he was based at North Weald with 71 (Eagle) Squadron in August 1941.
They were accompanied by a P-47G Thunderbolt ‘Snafu’ and P-51C Mustang ‘Princess Elizabeth,’ representing the later units of the US Eighth Air Force, which flew from airfields in Essex and East Anglia escorting the B-17 and B-24 bombers as their ‘Little Friends’.”

From NetSurfr, 12/24/2017

Hi everyone. I recently joined this forum as I'm trying to learn about the sport cruiser. I'm 50 years old married with an 8 year old and am a instrument rated PP with 450 hours. I own a very well equipped 1979 Piper Dakota that is a phenomenal plane.

Although as a family we have used our Dakota for travel wince I bought it in 2014, the reality is that 95% of my flying is just me flying around the local area for fun.

I fly out of a city/urban airport with zero good options to land should the engine quit shortly after takeoff or during the approach. Although I know the odds are low of this happening it still bothers me to the point that I don't take my plane out for night flights and I'm increasingly feeling uncomfortable flying my wife and/or kid in the plane for the same reason.

A plane w/ a BRS chute would be a solution that would solve my problems so given that my options are to look into used Cirrus aircraft BUT I really don't have the $ to move into a Cirrus especially when most of my flying is local flights for fun.

So I started considering the idea of getting an LSA like the sport cruiser and renting a SR22 for the 2 - 3 family plane trips we do in a year. So all that background brings me to this post.

Last week I had the chance to fly a 2016 sport cruiser and enjoyed it so I'm planning on getting checked out in it to continue to test it but in the meantime I'd love to get feedback from owners as to your opinions of this plane and the manufacturer (strength/weaknesses and things a potential owner should know).

From reading through the threads here I got the impression that CSA doesn't seem to be paying much attention to existing owners when it comes to LOA and I also got the impression the distribution channel is under flux so I'm a bit concerned about those aspects. So again I'd love to hear the good, bad, and the ugly from those of you with experience owning a sport cruiser.

Thanks,

 Jose

From Mewp, in Australia, 12/24/2017

i, I also moved from GA to LSA for much the same reasons as you are considering. I owned a c172 and found moving to the SC has many similar characteristics, flap ext, cruise speed, approach etc but do test fly one on a hot day.

With low weight and inertia you do get bounced around a lot and with the low xwind component and castering nose wheel landings on gusty days can be fun. CSA have improved a lot and respond quickly to any contact I have made.

Being in Australia I deal directly with the European agent and they refer me directly to CSA if needed. I do feel it was a good decision and if I need to carry more load or passengers I can hire. My A/C can carry me 85kg my wife 60kg, 20kg baggage and full fuel

SPD2918

WELCOME to the SCFLIER SportCruiser Forum !

The SportCruiser / PiperSport CRUZ S-LSA airplane is PERFECT for a new Sport Pilot !

The SportCruiser is lots of fun for two, easy to fly, economical, relatively fast, has a Proven, Reliable Rotax 912 engine, and most SportCruisers are equipped with awesome Avionics.

You will find lots of information on SportCruiser / PiperSport aircraft here on the SCFLIER forum.

I recommend using the Forum “Search” function (little magnifying glass at the top right) to quickly find info on topics you may be interested in.

If you can’t find your topic already discussed with “Search”, please post a new topic (with your questions) in the “Best Match” Forum outline area (for example Avionics equipment questions in the “General Avionics Discussion” area or a Rotax 912 engine performance question in the “Rotax Engine” area, ....many more Topic Areas in our forum Outline Structure...., )

or, if no “Matching” topic area can be found, use the “Random Thoughts” area to post an entirely NEW TOPIC question or idea.

The best way to learn about the SportCruiser line of awesome Light Sport Aircraft is to PARTICIPATE in SCFLIER forum discussions  !

good luck with your Pilot Training !

Hi all-

I'm a wannabe pilot who is retiring in 4 years and moving to central Florida.  I am interested in getting my sport pilot license in an SC because I'd like to own one someday.

Welcome spd2918, this is a great forum with LOTS of info here for the "reading".....which can be like drinking from a fire hose at times. :D

Are you moving to Central Florida now or in 4 years when you retire? Where to? I lived in North Central Florida for many years and in Orlando for 20+ years but now I'm in Clearwater. There are several SportCruiser owners in the Central Florida area. I know of a few schools and individual instructors that I can recommend that can get you your SPL, even one on this forum. Let us know more specifically where you're headed if you care to share. "Central Florida" is a vast area.

I am both retiring and moving in 4 years.  Currently we are looking at The Villages, but nothing is set in stone.

Ok, The Villages. Totally off the subject and before you "set that in stone" you are aware that The Villages is the STD capital of Florida, right? :o (just sayin')

Now, back to retiring and flying. :D As you probably already know the closest airport to there is Leesburg, +/- 20 miles as The Villages is a massive community. There are a few scattered around The Villages but they are all private. KLEE was the airport I first soloed at when I lived in Orlando so I have fond memories of Leesburg.

If you ever make it down to the Tampa/Clearwater area while vacationing in Florida BEFORE you retire let me know, I'd be glad to take you flying in my SportCruiser.

Welcome back Izzy, not being on to disappoint I just wanna be sure all our members are informed, be it for SportCruisers or STD’s. :D

Ironically  I was wondering about you yesterday and where you had gone. I almost texted you but I was getting ready to leave as we go to Savannah each year for Christmas. I was going to reach out when I got back. Hope you are doing well and I’ll want to hear about your new gig when you have time. Have a great holiday.

Hi folks, new here.  I'm a low time PP and haven't flown in years but thinking of getting back in the game.  I'm in Colorado Springs, home of Density Altitude and Wind Shear here at 6,300ft.  Too many medical issues to unpack from military career and don't want to risk asking.  Basic med not an option my last med cert is prior to '06.  If not for all that I would find an old jalopy 172.

But here I am...Iove the look of the SC and Sling 2 but have never seen a used Sling so really liking the idea of the CRUZ.  Will be asking some questions on the boards on best way to "transition" and any quirks to look out for.  Going up to Greeley soon to take a flight in a 2010 Piper Sport.

Welcome to the SportCruiser forum FlyAgain. Everything you ever wanted to know is here for the reading. Pour yourself your favorite cocktail , sit back and take it all in. The SportCruiser is an amazing LSA with as you know sexy ramp appeal compared to other LSA's. She does have her quirks (depending on the mfg year) and so does the factory so when in doubt ask any question you might have.

When you fly the SportCruiser/PiperSport the first thing you'll notice is how responsive they are compared to the old jalopy 172 you might be used to. When you move the stick the plane actually responds instantly not seconds later like a 172. :D And if you like technology you'll be blown away by the instrumentation, even though it only has the legacy Dynon glass. It's all you'll ever need in a glass panel.

Please report back after your demo flight. Would love to hear your take on it.

Welcome and enjoy.

Welcome! That's how it all started with me....drove to Stuart, Florida (100 miles North of my home) and went up for the first time in a 2010 PiperSport N545SC, took a few lessons, soloed, completed my checkride getting my SPL in that same bird. A few months later I purchased in to a partnership in a 2010 PiperSport 588DA.

All I can say is enjoy the ride. Quirks or model specific flying characteristics? You will find them and will learn through them and always know that when in doubt, you have a forum to bounce any concerns or questions you may have.

Cheers!

Hi I’m a UK (West of Scotland) PPL. 57 years old and achieved dream of my PPL 2 years ago. I bought a Jabiru 3300 engined 2012 home built SC just over a year ago. Recently updraded the steam gauges and Dynon  D100/120 to the Skyview HDX, with integrated Transponder, radio, AP and intercom. Also a Guardian Avionics iPad mini powered mount. Reasonably pleased with result but going to rebuild panel again later this year. Don’t like the layout and the big switches I fitted.

Planning on a second HDX, putting standard toggle switches and CB’s. Freeing up some space then in centre console as under UK LAA (similar to USA EAA) I must have backup primary instruments from alternative power/manufacturer.  So a Garmin G5 is my thinking.

Also looking to fit the Rotec water cooled heads https://www.rotecaerosport.com/lch to alleviate the overheating potential of the Jab.

Im currently resident in Atlanta GA on a 3 yr business visa. So would love to meet SC owners in Georgia or surrounding states.

THANK YOU for “Introducing” yourself on the SCFLIER SportCruiser Forum.  Welcome !

very interested in the kit built, Jabiru powered SportCruiser, your new instrument panel,  and also the UK Light Aircraft rules.

the pictures look great !  Awesome airplane.

looks like you have the Dynon Angle of Attack probe under the left wing ?  How is your static port done ?

I wonder if your engine cowlings would fit a USA Experimental E-LSA SportCruiser/PiperSport ?  The large round cooling air holes on front look to be just the thing to cool down a Rotax 912 engine !  Do you know where the original kit builder bought these engine cowlings ?  They look very useful  !

looking forward to hearing more about your SportCruiser panel Upgrades and incorporation of the GARMIN G5.

Welcome James and I "fourth" all that, beautiful plane and thanks for sharing. I'm in Clearwater Florida so "somewhat" close. I've been up to Douglas Georgia for lunch but that's not even close to where you are up in the north end of Georgia.

The Carling switches (or similar) you have are very nice and can be custom etched for anything but they do take up a lot of real estate. The mounting panels they offer also make for a clean install. I considered them for a while but decided to stick with switch/breakers for some added safety without the need for even more circuit breakers.

I like the carbon fiber look of the panel as well and also thought about doing this but with a gray color to match the interior a little more and make the instrument pop a little. Beautiful plan and great work.

Are you happy with the Jabiru engine? Any issues?

I’ve been reading over the forum on ADS B and thought I’d take a minute to introduce myself.  My first flight ever was in my instructors Piper sport.  I was hooked.  Looked for two year and eventually found the perfect fit and bought the same type I took lessons in.  I look forward to hanging in the background and reading over your posts.  Thanks to those who have taken the time to put all this great info out there!
